The Henchman was played by Rafe Masters(1922-1986). Rafe played the heavy in several movies before being arrested in the early 50s for his ties to the American Communist Party. Released after 3 years he defected to “The Motherland” in 1956 and found work in the Soviet film industry. For almost 30 years he was a hero of communists worldwide, making beautiful films that touched on everyday life while extolling the virtues of the government. In 1985 he began seeking permission to return to the States and meet a Daughter and Grandson he didn’t know he had. His visa request was denied. In early 1986 he was assassinated by the KGB after some paperwork was misfiled.(Boris Vorobev, who had defected to West Germany after publishing several harsh criticisms of Soviet life, received the Nabokov Award for Contributions to the Advancement of Soviet Culture and Arts)

No actual flies were harmed to make this scene. Records indicate that 14 dogs, 3 horses, a moose , and 14 flamingos did die during filming though none of those animals appear in the film.

Ambushed

The robot was portrayed by Ogden Waffling(b.1930). Ogden is familiar to most people as the organizer of the first sci-fi con, Speculative Fic-Con in 1948 in Los Angeles. He is also credited as inventing the word “Cosplayer” in the 70′s in response to a friend dressing up as comedian Bill Cosby.

The robot costume was “inspired”(read: ripped-off) by the “boiler-bots” of such films as Dr. Satan, the Tybalt Cram serials, and the pulp magazine covers of Caliban Wilson.
