Intervention 2011 or “now we have buttons Part 2
on September 27, 2011 at 12:02 amSo after taking advantage of our hotel’s free breakfast(and spilling 2% milk all over my pancakes) we headed out for Intervention Day 2. We arrived at out table and actually wound up with a pretty good day. The morning started off a little slow(which I’m sure had NOTHING to do with the room parties,AT ALL) but things picked up fairly quickly. I ran into some more friends from last year like Bree Rubin(NERD Comics) and Blue(Hello The Future) and Barb Fischer and Chris Impink(SledgeBunny) and Carl Kesner(Mysticon VA) . Saturday was also my busiest day of the con with 3 panels in the afternoon, 2 of which were back to back. With a 8 months pregnant wife holding down the fort while I’m gone, that’s a long time to go without a bathroom break. The first panel was “Young Guns Kicking It:The New Kids on the Block. I’m 38,so I don’t know how long I’m gonna pass for a Young Punk, but whatever. Myself,Eric Menge(Snow by Night), Christiann MacAuley(Sticky Comics) ,and Tovias(Reality Amuck). We spent an hour talking about our inspirations, our triumphs and failures and other lessons learned from making a webcomic. The only thing I wish we had touched more on was the business side, which Eric is an expert at,but that’s down to me letting us wander too far and wide about art.At the end of this panel the same young lady from my Offensive Topics panel, whose name I learned was Blair, had not only drawn the panel, but also drawn TWO pictures of me.She then graciously gave me the drawings, which you can see on our Facebook page.I can’t wait to see what she does with her talent in the future
The second panel was Webcomic Innovation with Chris Impink(SledgeBunny), T.Campbell(The Guilded Age),Myself, and Benjie and Peej(Slackjaw The Working Dead) .I felt a little overwhelmed between T. Campbell’s Crossword puzzle webcomic and the Flash using goodness of Slackjaw. Still it was a great panel with lots of audience input and left me wanting to do so much more with my own site and strip.
I got to spend an hour back at my table, but it wasn’t resting. We were interviewed for a blog, had several people stop and talk, and I was late for my last panel because we got swamped with people wanting books(not that it’s a bad thing).I finally made it to Web Comics Improv with Myself,Chris flick(Capes and Babes),Ben Kahan(Ansem Retort),and Barb Fisher(SledgeBunny). We weren’t sure who was supposed to be the host, but luckily Eric Kimball(Blade Bunny) stepped in and got us going. I know I write a webcomic that is supposed to be funny, but Improv is a beast I have trouble with.Still I enjoy the challenge and the audience enjoyed it,plus I not only won the internet, but got to declare my love to Chris Flick in front of a room full of people so,Good Times.
After the Dealer room shut down Saturday I was invited to a Meet and Greet party in the Con Suite between guests of Intervention, and The Enablers, people who had donated money to help Intervention happen this year.I spent some time meeting people and trying to win new fans, while trying to look like I really did belong in a room alongside Pete Abrams(Sluggy Freelance). After the party a bunch of us descended on the Gordon Biersch Restaurant and Brewery, and I mean a bunch. Myself,My Wife,Chris Flick(Capes and Babes),Eric Menge(Snow By Night),Brittany Michel(Snow By Night), Dawn Griffin(Zorphbert and Fred), Tony D.(SuperFrat), William”Shaggy”Chrapcynski(Binary Souls/Other Dimensions) and his wife,Elizabeth Staley(Adrastus) and her husband,Chris Otto and Ben Taylor(A Dog’s Life) and Rob Stenzinger(Art Geek Zoo). It was great sitting around and swapping stories, and tips with everyone and just enjoying ourselves.I hope we can make this an annual tradition.
Sunday was a slower day than Saturday,I sold a few books, gave away a couple of sketch cards and made the rounds to say goodbye to everyone. We had to leave a little early because of the long drive ahead of us but we enjoyed ourselves immensely.I want to thank Onezumi and Harknell for having us again this year.I want to say Hi to everyone that stopped by the table, and thank them for their time. Finally a big shout out to everyone I have mentioned in this article because…..
I have read your webcomic, and Penny arcade sucks.
