“Despite what they tell you, there are simply no moral absolutes in a complex world.”
― Berkeley Breathed
Having said that I want to say this: DON’T BOYCOTT CHICK-FIL-A!!!” If it seems weird to read that after today’s strip, then you haven’t been paying attention. I have, and I’m not going to let it just slide by anymore. The Cathy family are BILLIONAIRES, and could give 2 gelks about you buying chicken from them or not.Their Great-Grandchildren’s Great-Grandchildren will live better than all of us put together, even if every Chick-Fil-A in the world shuts down. The only people who are hurt by a boycott are the local owners and employees.
Now on to the toe stepping on part of the comments. A friend of mine recently made the comment “I couldn’t be a Christian, because I couldn’t hold that much hate in my heart.” That should break your heart, but then again if you ARE a Christian, then you hate no one. Take Matthew 5:21-22, You have heard that it was said to an older generation, ‘Do not murder,’ and ‘whoever murders will be subjected to judgment.’ But I say to you that anyone who is angry with a brother will be subjected to judgment. And whoever insults a brother will be brought before the council, and whoever says ‘Fool’ will be sent to fiery hell.
“But I’m not looking to murder anyone.”You’ll say, “I just don’t believe in Gay Marriage” Fine, but those people are your brothers, and sisters, for God created everyone of us IN HIS IMAGE. The words and feelings you have towards them in this life, will be held in judgement against you in the next. According to Jesus anyway, but what does he know, right? Leviticus is the only book that matters. Like Leviticus 19:18 ” Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord.”
But you say “I need to take a stand and let people know I’m a Christian” Because reposting something on Facebook or Twitter is what it takes.I mean it’s so much easier that actually going into the world and doing good deeds or helping those in need right? Like Matthew 12:33 “Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.”
No the problem is best summed up by Jesus in his Sermon on the Mount. Matthew 6:1 “Be careful about not living righteously merely to be seen by people. Otherwise you have no reward with your Father in heaven” and Matthew 6:5-6 “Whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray while standing in synagogues and on street corners so that people can see them. Truly I say to you, they have their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you”
“But I can’t defy the preacher/my church/my upbringing. What would Jesus think?”
He’d think you were doing it right. The gospels are full of his defiance of the church, and authorities of the day in pursuit of what he knew to be right. So in conclusion, before you resend something on Facebook, or erect a huge cross or build a mega-church ask yourself if your doing it because you have religion, like the Pharisees, or Faith, like Jesus and the disciples?
In my opinion if you have to pick a fight with Taylor Swift to stay relevant,It’s time to pack it in.And for the love of decency quit trying to butch yourself up.Honestly Taylor Swift looks like manlier than Liam Neeson next to you.
I would love to see a Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin ticket for 2012.Of course I’m a cartoonist so take that into consideration.
While the followers of Harold Camping have been breaking apart their families, quitting their jobs, selling their material possessions, and spending every dime they have on spreading his prediction, HE sits in his fine home with HIS 70 million dollar personal fortune intact.
I’m not going to rehash Rob Granito’s story here,it’s been done on too many sites already. If you feel the need to read the whole saga just Google him.I do want to spend some time talking about how this story affects me though.
I’ve been creating Hainted Holler for over 400 strips, and 22 months.I started with no training,no money, and no readers.I’ve encountered many “hiccups” along the way, from sickness,to server moves,to site crashes, but through it all I’ve pushed myself to be better, and find my own voice.Every step of the way though I had support, from friends, family, and even other creators I met online. When I was invited to my first convention last year(Intervention) I was overwhelmed that ANYONE would consider me a “professional” and want me at their con.Since then I’ve been fortunate enough to be a guest at 2 other cons(Mysticon, and SheVaCon) and have 2 more in the near future(Balticon, and Intervention).Everyone I’ve met at these cons has been so friendly, and supportive of me and Hainted Holler.I’ve gotten to meet and talk with people I’ve admired, and been a fan of for years.I’ve met others, like myself, who just can’t believe they’re behind a table instead of in front of it.Whether they ever read the comic or not all of them have been patient and kind, and indulged my questions, offered advice, and honest critiques, and even offered a helping hand should I need it.In the greater scheme of things I’m not a Penny Arcade or a Sluggy Freelance and may never be,but every word, every line, and every comic here is mine.My work,by my hand, from my mind and heart.People like Rob Granito ruin that.
They take advantage of the world I’ve found myself in at these conventions. In these rooms, for those weekends, everyone is the same.Talk to any guest, dealer, or attendee and you’ll find a fellow fan. You’ll find someone that will understand you because they are you.People who aren’t afraid to help you with whatever dream you want to make real.I know I’m rambling but to sum it up,this is the first BoonHead Award I’ve given that I TRULY believe is deserved.Long live the cons,Long live the fans, and long live the creators.
If you want to convert people to your way of thinking or your religious beliefs, try to live the life your promoting and talk to those who seem interested.Trust me,right now no one can take you seriously.Thanks.
